24 Rhett Smith | C Hometown: Taloga, OK HS: Taloga High School Played from 1984-86 College: OU Notes: Had what is considered the best 16-year-old season in team history, setting records in homeruns (25) and RBI (127) during the summer of 1985. |
Nicknamed "Bubba" for his country personality and grizzly bear strength, Rhett Smith never met a fastball he didn't take a hack at. His free-swinging attitude at the plate netted him two hallowed records in 1985 -- most homeruns in a season (25) and most runs batted in for a single season (127).
He put up those numbers as a 16-year-old. And both records still stand.

127 runs batted in (1st) 25 homeruns (tied 1st) 28 doubles (tied 7th) 98 runs scored (10th) 16 hit by pitch (tied 3rd) |
His homerun mark has been tied (by Ryan and Damon Minor), but Smith's RBI total has held strong, with nary a threat for well over 20 years.
While Rhett was aided by the massive 1985 schedule -- 98 games that produced a whopping 319 at-bats -- the fact that he was able to put up the record totals at just 16 years of age was incredible. To this day former coach Bob Ward calls him the strongest 16-year-old player he's ever seen in his life. "And there isn't even a close second," added Ward.
He also hit doubles in 1985 -- 28 of them to be exact, putting him in the top 10 of that category as well. And when he wasn't crushing pitchers, they were pelting him. Bubba absorbed 16 bean-balls in '85. The third highest total ever.
Defensively Smith was a star behind the plate. He was built like a cinder-block and could throw the ball through one.
One of Smith's most memorable Traveler moments was in the '85 American Legion World Series where he blasted a towering 3-run homer to give his squad a 3-1 lead in the opening game of the tournament.
Bubba played his entire college career at the University of Oklahoma, where he was a three-year letterman at catcher. Nowadays he lives in Taloga with his wife Connie and their daughter Rae Lynn.
